Let it Flow Like a Story
Although it seems like a lifetime ago, it’s always fun to reminisce about the good ol’ days of undergrad with friends. My core group of friends from James Madison University and I are in a group chat where we sporadically share random memories. The latest exchange involved discussing an old marketing class that was painfully boring. It felt like an accomplishment to stay awake for this particular professor’s lectures.
While I don’t remember a thing the professor taught us, I still learned a valuable lesson - it is far easier to remember something when it is presented to you like a story, as you can imagine yourself in that situation. This article from Harvard Business further explains, “Through stories, we can utilize vicarious experience, mentally rehearsing how we might handle a situation before we have to face it.”
On the other hand, I think about my 8th grade science teacher, Mr. Bell. Although I took this class even longer ago, I can recall Newton’s Laws of Motion in my sleep. That is because Mr. Bell taught us by incorporating storytelling into his lessons and made everything he taught us exciting!
As marketers, we too must make captivate our audience for our messages to “stick.” And one of the best ways to do this is through storytelling. Don’t believe me? Well, you read this post, didn’t you?
